This was sent via Wells Fargo Express by Conroy & O'Connor to Chichizola's Mercantile and Mining Equipment in Jackson Gate. The two Chichizola brothers were Italian immigrants who established one of the most enduring family business legacies of the California Gold Rush. While many came for gold, the Chichizolas found their fortune in the "merchant" side of the rush, operating their store for an incredible 127 years. Jackson Gate never had an "official" post office due to its proximity to the larger town of Jackson. Starting in 1849, the Chichizola brothers took orders on horseback and delivered supplies—and often personal correspondence—to miners at the gate.
