G.S. Hatch owned the vast majority of the land where the community of Seventy Six sat, including an 800-acre tract of fruit orchards and a large timber operation. He operated the town's general store, known as the G.S. Hatch Store, which was a focal point for the community. The store housed the town's post office (which operated from 1880–1957). The second floor of his store even served as the meeting place for Presbyterian church services. At the height of the town's activity, Hatch reportedly had nearly the entire population of Seventy Six in his employ across his various businesses, including the store, the Hatch Grain Company, and the boat landing.
