In 1876, mail on this line was handled by a Route Agent. Unlike later Railway Post Office (RPO) clerks who sorted mail in transit, early agents primarily received and dispatched closed pouches or cancelled mail deposited directly at the train station. The line connected Spartanburg to Alston, a critical junction in Fairfield County where it met the Greenville and Columbia Railroad. This route was a vital link for the "Hub City" of Spartanburg, allowing mail to flow from the upstate toward Columbia and the coast.
