Very clean, appealing cover with a pair of CSA 7-R - Richmond paper - Pair on cover CV $100 - pen cancels that don't obscure the portrait. It's a fine piece for any CW cver collection.

Researching activity on each April 28 at Grayson CH during the Civil War reveals nothing significant until 1865. The War was Over in Virginia. Confederate General Robert E. Lee had already surrendered the Army of Northern Virginia on April 9, 1865. Virginia was entirely under Union military control, and local Confederate units were actively disbanding.

During the Civil War, Grayson Court House was located in Independence, Virginia (the county seat). It served as a vital local administrative center where Confederate companies were organized earlier in the war. By late April 1865, local civil government had ceased functioning, Confederate currency was completely worthless, and citizens were trying to secure food and survive the transition into the Reconstruction era.
