The post office in Vanzant, Missouri (located in Douglas County) served as a quintessential Ozark mountain "star route" station for nearly 70 years, surviving deep into the mid-20th century. Vanzant is now considered an unincorporated community. The Vanzant Community Building (the old schoolhouse) remains a popular gathering place for bluegrass music jams and local meetings. The Vanzant Cemetery also serves as a historical record of the community’s early families.
