MO DPO - Hawley - 16-year operation - 1898-1908

Open Date: Established in 1892. It was named after the Hawley family, who were prominent early settlers in the county.

Close Date: Discontinued and permanently closed in 1908, after which its local mail routes were consolidated into larger neighboring regional offices.

Sent October 5, 1903, as the intensive logging around Whetstone Creek that peaked in the late 1890s had largely cleared out the most accessible, high-value timber. The micro-economy in 1903 was forced to transition away from commercial lumbering. Families pivoted fully to livestock raising and specialized farming, turning cleared timber fields into pastures for cattle and small orchards.

Despite entering the 20th century, modern utilities like electricity and telephone lines were entirely absent from Hawley in 1903. The primary means of local transit remained the horse and wagon over dirt roads that ruggedly cut through the Ozark topography.
