The post office officially opened on July 15, 1881. After 26 years of service, the office was closed on October 31, 1907. Today, Gazette is considered a extinct town or a "historical location." It sat at the junction of what are now Route VV and County Road 470 in Pike County. While the post office is long gone, the name "Gazette" is still used locally to describe the surrounding rural area and the historic Gazette Cemetery.
