The Elmer, Missouri Post Office in northern Macon County operated for 122 years before falling victim to modern postal restructuring. Its history is a classic example of a "boom and bust" Midwestern railroad town.

Elmer owes its entire existence to the railroad. In 1888, the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway extended its steel tracks through northern Macon County. To service the construction workers, new businesses, and incoming farmers, the federal government officially established the Elmer Post Office in 1889. It was closed in 2011.
