Because Marshall was the headquarters for the T&P Railway, the post office was a critical link in the Railway Mail Service. Marshall processed more mail than almost any other city in East Texas during the late 19th century due to the heavy administrative correspondence of the railroad. Mail bags were transferred directly from the T&P Depot to the post office downtown via horse-drawn wagons
