In 1846, the post office operating in Fredericktown (Frederick), Maryland, was a central hub for regional communication and was deeply tied to the local community's prominent figures and shifting business districts. The Postmaster of Fredericktown in 1846 was John Rigney, Esq. He originally took over the station on January 1, 1839, and managed the town's mail throughout the 1840s.

Per the historical journals of local diarist Jacob Engelbrecht, the Frederick post office traveled based on the preference of the current postmaster. During this era, Rigney operated the post office out of “Bentz's old house near the Market Street Bridge,” which sat conveniently directly opposite his personal residence.
