Feb 6 1847 - Folded letter with red oval Steamer paid 5 marking
Sent from New York City to Providence, Rhode Island. The term "North River" (noted in content) was the historical name for the Hudson River in New York City. While the Providence mail route typically sailed east through the Long Island Sound, this letter's era saw the North River become the heart of the "Steamboat Revolution" for other major routes. Starting in 1847, the legendary Fall River Line operated out of their own dedicated North River dock. Passengers would board here for an overnight trip through the Sound to Fall River, Massachusetts, where they connected to trains for Providence and Boston.
