The Doremus machines arose around 1899 as improvements over Hampden machines, with the Doremus Company of Washington, D.C., receiving contracts to refurbish older machinery. The Doremus Company was involved in a scandal in 1906, where principals were accused of bribing postal officials (Beavers) to purchase their canceling machines. This cover is from 1906...just sayin'.
