Notation in pencil reads, "Important - Two letters from my Father, one written in 1862 - other in 1864 - while in camp." The letters are no longer with the envelope. The addressee, John S. Wilson was a prominent Confederate officer and political figure from Chester, South Carolina.
He served as a Captain in Company D (known as the "Chester Troop") of the 1st South Carolina Cavalry. Captain Wilson led his company in several major battles, including:
Battle of Brandy Station (June 9, 1863): He was wounded during this engagement, which was the largest cavalry battle of the war.
Battle of Gettysburg: He commanded the Chester Troop during this pivotal 1863 campaign.
