On August 6, 1864, Harpers Ferry was at the center of a major turning point in the Civil War. On this exact day, Major General Philip Sheridan arrived in the area to take command of the newly formed Army of the Shenandoah. Sheridan gathered roughly 50,000 troops in and around Harpers Ferry, including the veteran 6th Corps and three cavalry divisions. While the town had changed hands eight times throughout the war, this arrival marked the beginning of permanent Union control until the end of the conflict.
