An astounding Civil War letter from 17-year-old Andrew Joyner Burton, a volunteer in the 3rd North Carolina Regiment attending the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, to his Father, Rev. Robt. O. Burton. Young Andrew expresses concerns about his imminent conscription into the Confederate Army.

The stampless cover is in rough shape. There's enough of the postmark visible (and the content confirms it) to determine it was mailed from Chapel Hill, North Carolina, on November 3rd, 1864. The letter was paid at the rate of 3 cents, idicated by the rate marking "PAID" stamped on the cover and a manuscript cancel, "III"

The content is an open window to the closing few months of the Civil War as the South was desparately attempting to wrest control eastern of North Carolina from the Union troops.
