In the late 19th century, the hamlet of Catfish served as a rural hub. Its postal history is closely tied to its geographic location on Catfish Creek, in the northeast part of Palermo, Oswego County.

The hamlet was originally known as Catfish, but the name was later changed to Vermillion.
