Baltimore, MD Stampless to Port Republic, VA - 1849 - flatboat delivery

The addressees, addressed on the cover as "Messrs Dundore & Eddins" of Port Republic, Rockingham County, Virginia, were prominent merchants, business partners, and industrialists operating during the town's golden era of river commerce.

The accompanying letter heavily dictates their primary trade. They were tanners and leather merchants who bought raw hides (such as Spanish and domestic slaughter hides) from major metropolitan markets like Baltimore to process into leather products in Virginia.

In 1849, Dundore & Eddins were situated at the highest navigable point of the Shenandoah River. Their business relied on flat-bottomed boats to float regional goods and local mail downstream and bring raw materials and mail into Rockingham County.

That makes this folded letter one that made the final leg of it's trip to Port Republic on a flatboat.
