Camp Wickliffe was a strategic Union training camp established in late 1861 near New Haven, Kentucky, in Nelson County. It is most famous (and infamous) for being a site of extreme hardship and disease rather than a field of battle. Sent to Samuel Bett, a private in Company H of the 51st Ohio Volunteer Infantry. He mustered into service in the autumn of 1861 at Camp Meigs. By December 1861, his unit moved to Louisville and then to Camp Wickliffe, Kentucky. He died of disease (likely typhoid fever or pneumonia) on January 29, 1862, while the regiment was stationed at Camp Wickliffe.
