Point Lookout, located at the southernmost tip of Maryland in St. Mary's County, was the site of the Union's largest prisoner-of-war (POW) camp during the American Civil War. Originally a popular summer resort, it was transformed into a massive military complex that included a hospital, a garrison, and a notorious prison camp. Sent to Hamilton Hayward in Royalston Center, MA. Hamilton Hayward operated a general store in town, which served as a primary hub for the rural community, much like the post offices and stores in neighboring towns.
