In 1857, the New York City Post Office underwent a major expansion by establishing its first successful network of branch locations, known as "sub-offices" or stations. Following the alphabetical system, the first and primary branch was named Station A. These stations were created to ease the extreme congestion at the main post office and were located between 1.5 to 3 miles away from the central hub. They provided local mail collection, money orders, and registered mail facilities, allowing New Yorkers to send letters without traveling to Lower Manhattan.
