DRUMMONDVILLE, U.C. TO AURORA, N.Y. — AUGUST 31, 1848 — QUEENSTOWN–LEWISTON CROSS-BORDER EXCHANGE.

Stampless cover prepaid 4½d Canadian currency to the lines, carried through Queenstown U.C., September 1, across the Niagara River to Lewiston, N.Y., September 1, and onward to Aurora, Cayuga County. The Canadian payment indication was cancelled during cross-border accounting and the face bears 5¢ and 10¢ U.S. rate markings, apparently reflecting rerating at the exchange, the correct single U.S. rate to a destination within 300 miles being 5¢. A particularly instructive example of the short-lived 1847–49 Canadian paid-to-the-lines/U.S.-postage-due system.
